stainless steel rusting dilemma
Sorry, I'm about to write a review on a product I do NOT own (but was thinking of buying). I did remember seeing these in a store a couple years back, and they did feel really good in the hand, though.

But the main point of my posting is to help people understand all the issues about stainless steel rusting or not rusting. This is a great FAQ from Specialty Steel Industry of North America. ([...]):

1. What makes stainless steel stainless?

Answer: Stainless steel must contain at least 10.5 % chromium. It is this element that reacts with the oxygen in the air to form a complex chrome-oxide surface layer that is invisible but strong enough to prevent further oxygen from "staining" (rusting) the surface. Higher levels of chromium and the addition of other alloying elements such as nickel and molybdenum enhance this surface layer and improve the corrosion resistance of the stainless material. Honest warning.
I am baffled and frustrated by all of the good reviews this flatware has received. Baffled because I received this set in early April and less than two months later the majority of the pieces have rust spots - which only continue to appear. Frustrated because I put stock in the positive comments, which ultimately led me to make the purchase. The flatware does look nice and it is sturdy and solid, but it rusts, which far outweighs any positive aspect. There is a reason the set is so cheap...it is cheap.

Since I'm benefitting from the reviews of others, I might as well give one myself. So here's my take on this product:

I sure can recommend this Oneida silverware set. It's probably not the highest quality (18/10 steel, other Oneida sets would have some higher value I think), which is adequately reflected in the price. My set does show some "darkening" streaks... maybe I should better say that it just doesn't shine as much anymore as when it was new (having it for 1.5 years now, no dishwasher though). My personal take is that this "darkening" (on single pieces only, I should add) is due to what I perceive as the lower quality of the steel -- which may or may not be true, I'm speaking as a lay person obviously. Having said all this: this is a very appealing design, doesn't look neither too casual nor too chic, it weighs very well in one's hand and is balanced well, and the knives cut well. Very low quality--Typical Chinese Junk
It's sad. There was a time when Oneida meant quality. Those days are gone--now Oneida is just a nameplate, and its products are manufactured in generic, no name factories in China just like the X brand junk you can get at any budget store.

This set is low quality. The pieces are made from very heavy steel. Why? Because the steel they use is 18/0 stainless, the lowest quality stainless you can get. They have to make the pieces thick or they'll bend. Compare that to my 10 year old Oneida set, made from 18/8 stainless. They're thin and light as a feather because it's high quality steel.

Also, they include an insert in the packaging to tell you not to use these with acidic foods and that they must be washed right away to prevent damage. Why? Because low quality 18/0 stainless will be etched by food, but higher quality stainless (18/8) will not. In other words, don't fall for the hype. If it's cheap junk you want, buy a cheap junk brand and pay a cheap...

Appropriate for value priced shoppers
The quality and durability is average for sets in this price range.
The appearance is clean and simple.
The soft metal surface does scratch easily. If you have any hard water issues, the smooth surface may show water spots.
If you use any sort of abrasive cleaning, such as a scratch pad, the surface WILL scratch. Hand drying may be necessary.
The knife handles are somewhat heavier than average. The set is heavy enough to prevent bending.
If you are looking for a set in this price range, and avoid the scratching issues mentioned, you'll likely find they are satisfactory.

Very Nicely Done Set Of Flatware
These are great if you're looking for flatware to use day to day. They are well made, good esthetics, nice weight and balance, and have an excellent finish to them. I would highly recommend them to anyone.

A SET OF Nikita Bistro 20 pc Forged Stainless Steel Flatware Set

RUSTED - Do Not Buy
This silverware was fine until the knives all developed significant rust spots when they came out of the dishwasher after two months of ordinary use. The return window is ONE month. Do not waste your money on this set of utensils - there's nothing 'stainless steel' about them and Amazon will not help you. I'm not about to let my family ingest rust so these are useless. What a rip-off.

I have been looking for this set for awhile now again
I bought this in 2001 when I got married, I seperated & ended up giving all of my stuff that was in storage away & there was my silverware that I loved............So was in Target today & couldn't belive my eyes but they had the brushed ones & didn't care for it but wanted to know the name of what they called it & hopped on Amazon sure enough they have it i'm ordering 2 boxes as i'm getting my own place soon & i'm pretty picky about my kitchen stuff so i'm very excited it's sturdy but not too heavy definetly don't like to buy flimsy stuff that will end up being replaced quickly after being used this is a set that I used for 7 years & was in perfect condition.

the better Bistro
My wife and I looked at a lot of flatware patterns, and the Bistro pattern really caught our eye. We looked at the Hampton Bistro first-hand, but the quality was poor--looked more scratched than brushed, kind of cheap. So we took our chances on this set, sight unseen. We love it. Has a very solid feel, and the forks have a nice width, and it's solid--as in, the prongs are quite rigid and unlikely to bend. This set is polished, not brushed. It's made from 18/0 stainless, meaning that it can spot; just wipe it down occasionally. Nice feel, good value for the money. The Bistro is a nice, classy design that just seems to fit any occasion.
